Servo Motor and Drive Compatibility Checklist

Compatible servo motor and drive connected through matching interfaces

The key electrical, feedback, cable, brake, firmware, and mechanical checks for matching a servo motor and drive.

A servo motor and drive operate as a matched motion-control system. Similar power ratings do not guarantee compatibility because feedback, commutation, firmware, brake, thermal sensing, and cable requirements must also match.

Confirm the approved combination

Start with the complete motor and drive catalogue numbers. Use the manufacturer’s combination tables to verify supported ratings, firmware, feedback devices, cables, and option modules.

Compare electrical ratings

  • Supply voltage and drive output current
  • Motor continuous and peak current
  • Power, speed, duty cycle, and peak torque
  • Regenerative energy and braking resistor needs
  • Motor cable length, reactor, and filter requirements

Verify feedback and cables

Encoder or resolver connector shape alone does not prove compatibility. Check protocol, resolution, voltage, pinout, motor identification data, shielding, conductor size, flex rating, and cable length.

Check brake and mechanics

Confirm brake voltage and current, temperature-sensor type, shaft, key, flange, frame, seal, inertia, and load connection. Back up drive parameters before replacement, then commission the axis with suitable limits and safety controls.
