How to Source Obsolete Industrial Automation Parts

A practical approach to identifying, validating, sourcing, and planning replacements for discontinued automation components.

Automation hardware can remain in service long after its commercial lifecycle ends. A disciplined sourcing process reduces the risk of buying the wrong revision, receiving unsuitable used equipment, or discovering software incompatibility during a shutdown.

Identify the installed unit completely

Record the manufacturer, full part number, series, revision, firmware, serial number, option modules, supply, and machine function. Photograph all labels and connectors.

Define acceptable supply condition

  • New factory-sealed or new old stock
  • Manufacturer refurbished
  • Tested used equipment
  • Repair service or exchange unit
  • Approved current-generation migration

Ask for condition details, test evidence, warranty, lead time, and photographs before purchase.

Validate compatibility

Check firmware, memory, communication protocol, software version, licensing, connector pinout, mechanical fit, and safety or approval requirements. A matching base code with a different suffix may not be interchangeable.

Prepare for failure before it happens

Back up programs and parameters, keep engineering software and cables available, document network settings, and maintain a ranked critical-spares list. Test stored spares periodically under an approved process.
